More about Torun
The city of Torun was founded in December 1233. The first settlement was built by the Teutons in the Land of Chelmno. Legend has it, that the very first dwelling was built on a mighty oak tree and then, gradually a town developed, which, plagued by repeated floods, was relocated to the site where it presently stands today. The Teutonic Knights were placed under Polish rule following the treaties of 1411 and 1466. The city held religious synods in 1595 and 1645. The Germans ruled Torun for the larger part of the 19th century and at the time of the second World War. The Germans renamed it Thorn.
