Attractions in Kaszuby

The attractions of Kashubia are many. The natural landscape is by far the main reason for you to visit the place. Chains of picturesque hills slope down to the lakes, the rivers Brda, Wda, Zbryca, and Chocina flow through the region. There are sand dunes in the north, deep forests in the south and some of Poland's wildest beaches on the shores of the Baltic. The region between Kartuzy and Koscierzyna in Kashubia is known as the Kashub Switzerland where the waters of the lakes cascade down the mountainside in rivulets. A major attraction is Lake Wdzydze which is cross shaped, pointing to the four corners of the globe. The area is almost untouched by human exploitation.

You must also visit Kashubia to see the several churches that are there in almost every town. The varied architecture and décor of the churches make them interesting heritage sites. In Karutzy - the old capital of the region is the Gothic Church from the 15th century. The nave of the church is covered by a baroque style roof that resembles a coffin.

In the town of Zukowo, which was one of the first settlements in Kashubia, there is the Nobertine Convent belonging to the 14th century. Its richly decorated neo-renaissance high altar and the huge organ make it unique. Wejherowo is a famous pilgrimage in Kaszuby. People from distant places come to visit the Franciscan Church built in 1651 in the baroque style with brick and stone. Also well known is the Trinity Church in Koscierzyna with its Renaissance-Baroque altar and the late Gothic sculpture of the crucifixion.

Kaszuby also has a few museums which give a glimpse of the local folk culture. The Kashubian Regional Museum in Kartuzy introduces you to the domestic cultural and religious traditions of the local people. The Museum of Kashubian Pottery of the Necel family in Chmielno is a showcase of the art of pottery making. The most interesting perhaps is the Open air Railway Museum in Koscierzyna dating back to 1929. The museum displays old trains, and documents the development of the railways in the region.
