John Paul II, Karol Wojtyla (1920-2005)

A professor and head of department of the Ethics Faculty at the Catholic University in Lublin, he became a bishop in 1958, the archbishop of Cracow in 1963 and a cardinal in 1967. He became the Pope in 1978. Active spiritual work and an openness to dialogue characterized his Pontificate. He was the first Pope in the entire history of the Church to hold prayer meetings with all religions. He had stressed on the respect for human rights and the right to work, struggle for peace and opposition to totalitarianism.
